Homemade wine making - Now I've tried it!

My Father is in to it, my brother is there, many of my friends always have the bucket bubbling... I have never before tried it myself until now! But I suppose I am hooked now too. Homemade wine making is fast becoming very popular across the world. You can make it taste the way you want, and basically use whatever you have - or like - for your base flavor. I am most definitely going to play around more whit this! First things first - how much do you want to make? I recommend at least 5 gallons (~19 liters). Why? An old truth is this: Beginning home wine makers just cannot wait to taste what they have made. In addition, 5 gallons is only 25 bottles. So you'll get the batch finished, and then you will try a bottle or 2 or 3. Then you'll wait a week and try a few more bottles. Sooner than later, pretty much sooner I noticed, it will all be gone before it has a chance to age and get really good. With 5 gallons to begin with - you just might be tempted to let a few of the...

Sciatica - Not fun at all

Just a few years back, at least it seem that way, I used to laugh at people suffering from sciatica. "Too much beer and red wine", was a common joke about those elderly men who limped around looking.. old. Now it isn't that funny anymore, since I learned first hand how painful it really can be. And I am not old, but right now I really feel old and probably I look old too. I quick search and surf on the net gives me some valuable information about this problem; Sciatica occurs due to a variety of reasons. It can happen due to Herniation of the Spinal Disc, Spinal Stenosis, Piriformis Syndrome, Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction and even Pregnancy. Red wine and beer have nothing at all to do with it. Since I am one of these strange creatures that don't like taking pills, unless I really have to for some reason, I am looking for another way to ease the pain. Common treatment, I read, of sciatica recommended by doctors is invasive surgery and meditation therapy. But th...

Have a potato!

We all know by now that we’re supposed to limit our consumption of white bread, white rice, and white pasta. Somehow potatoes got swept up in that ban, too. White potatoes are suddenly said to be fattening, cause diabetes and almost all the bad things you can think of. Can all of those claims really be true? Christian Henderson, RD, and a New York City-based nutritionist have a different opinion: "White potatoes are actually very good for you, they're a great source of potassium and vitamin C, and they have almost 4 grams of fiber with the skin on." Ok. In my mind that is still not enough, I need to see some more research on this subject before I am convinced. Researches, published in the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), tells us that potatoes contain high concentrations of antioxidants, including phenolic acids, anthocyanins, and carotenoids. Potatoes also offer vitamin B6, vitamin C and iron, and are an excellent source of potassium. Sudde...

How to easily stop Acid Reflux and Heartburn

Acid reflux disease, also known as gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD), occurs due to the coexistence of several medical and lifestyle conditions. Yes, I had to look that up. As most of us know, the foods we consume play an important role when it comes to keeping our body's delicate natural inner balance. What acid reflux food should I avoid? This is a question most gastroesophageal reflux disease sufferers struggle upon. Here is a simplified list of things to avoid: 1. Coffee and other caffeine containing beverages lead to increased acidity, so avoid large amounts of coffee. 2. Alcohol can irritate the stomach and relax the LES muscle, leading to increased acidity and reflux. 3. High-fat foods are among the biggest culprits behind GERD symptoms. 4. Chocolate contains a great deal of caffeine and fat. This may increase acidity and worsen digestion and hence should be avoided. 5. Milk and milk-based products that contain a big proportion of calcium should also be a...

Ketogenic diet...

Yes, I absolutely love the idea of eating bacon and butter all the time... But what is a ketogenic diet really? On a ketogenic diet, your entire body switches its fuel supply to run almost entirely on fat. Insulin levels become very low, and fat burning increases dramatically. It becomes easy to access your fat stores to burn them off. This is obviously great if you’re trying to lose weight, but there are also seem to be other less obvious benefits, such as less hunger and a steady supply of energy. A ketogenic diet is not suitable for everyone, doctors say that if you are on medication for diabetes or high blood pressure or if you are breastfeeding you should avoid these kinds of diets. Want to force your body to always burn fat for energy — so you lose the fat and keep it off? Don't miss out on protein in a smart diet...

Sadly, many dieters - including myself - miss out on one simple rule when we try out a new diet, and it way too often cost us our success. So here it is, as a reminder. Don’t let your protein intake fall short. Of all the foods you might eat while on a fat loss diet, protein is probably the most important. The right amount of protein will take you to the Promised Land, flowing with good health and energy. Protein combats hunger, stabilizes blood glucose levels, and prevents lean muscle loss. The result is a raised metabolism and accelerated fat loss. Aim to consume some in every meal and snack. For some unexpected sources of protein, consider quinoa, avocado or bulgur in some form. And, you may ask here, what the heck is "bulgur"? Bulgur wheat, yes it is a grain, is surprisingly nutritional and has a number of health benefits, including its ability to improve digestion, stimulate growth and development, stimulate circulation, aid with sleep, prevent chronic disease,...

Going vegetarian...

During the weekend I was on a birthdayparty, a friend of mine turned... well, I am told it's not polite to talk about the age of women. However, she looks much, much younger than she actually is. Good for her, but it made me feel older than I am... Well. We got cheesecake, and I simply love cheesecakes, but this one was a bit different to the ones I usually get. There was no real cheese in it, instead all was done vegan style. I actually much to my surprise liked it. She was kind enough to send me her recipe, I am not sure if she's come up with it herself or not, but here it is: CRUST 1 cup packed (200 g) pitted dates 1 cup (120 g) raw walnuts FILLING 1 1/2 cups (180 g) raw cashews, quick-soaked 1 large lemon, juiced (scant 1/4 cup or 50 ml) 1/3 cup (80 g) coconut oil, melted 1/2 cup + 2 Tbsp (150 ml) full-fat coconut milk 1/2 cup (120 ml) maple syrup 2 Tbsp (32 g) salted natural peanut butter As I understood it, you make it the same way you make a "normal...

I used to be a chef...

Yes, in my previous life I used to be a chef and I worked on many different high standard restaurants.  The reason I quit doing that was that all the long days and nights caused me a burnout. I couldn't stand cooking, I didn't even like eating the stuff anymore. These days I mainly cook at home, for me, my wife, friends and family, and kind of enjoy doing it again. We tend to eat as healthy as possible, mostly, and avoid things we know are directly unhealthy. I guess most of us humans who can afford it do so, most of the times, these days. One thing that is completely banned in our house now is sugar. We all tend to eat way too much of the stuff, it is hidden everywhere you look; sauces, dressings, all the canned products and almost all of the stuff you have for your breakfast... Everywhere. Living a normal life gives you more than the share of sugar your body need. Back in those days when I was a chef, however, we did not so much care about all these different proble...

Turbulence Training - Ever heard of it?

There is a new thing causing a bit of a stir among us health freaks called Turbulence Training , that claim all those old boring so called experts and doctors are dead wrong. You should NOT do hours and hours of running, pedaling and stepping... or whatever you're told by them to do. Recently, several new studies have revealed that long, slow and boring cardio workouts actually SABOTAGE your natural ability to burn ugly belly fat. Instead you should do it all relatively fast and in one go... Sounds like a good business plan to me, 80% of your results come from 20% of your efforts - so why do endless amounts of cardio and redundant strength training exercises? In fact, research shows that all those different treadmills, elliptical machines and stairmasters can actually train your body to STORE fat instead of burning it. Other studies again show that cardio not only makes you fatter, it also ages you faster. In a study published in the Journal of Sports Medicine and Physica...

Is the air you breath connected to how you feel?

Well, it may very well sound like a stupid question to many of you, of course the air we breath have an impact on how we feel. But did you know every breath you take could be literally draining your energy and even making you fat?! As a matter of fact, NASA scientists have tested this and found that not only can breathing too much bad air directly cause symptoms of exhaustion and lethargy, but it can also increase hunger, lead to weight gain, migraines, irritability and even contribute to the epidemic rise in diabetes! To be honest, I just recently discovered all of this, and more, myself in a brand new book called " Thin Air " by Brad Pilon. I’ve been applying a few of the quick tricks in the book and my energy levels are through the roof already after only a few days!

International Hug a Librarian Day...

Yes, it may sound a bit strange, but today we are celebrating the international hug a librarian day. Where the origins of this custom, and day, originate from I have no idea, but it is not such a bad thought at all... we all need a hug every now and then. But I really hope the librarians do know about this before you all run in hugging the first librarian you see, or we will begin seeing a lot of strange hashtags. When I did some research about this day, for another of the places I write, I found a nice BuzzFeed written by Sarah Galo back in 2015; " 17 Stories That Will Make You Want To Hug Your Librarian ". Head over and have a look, many of those stories are really cute. The Librarian plays a very important role in our society, the books he/she provide are packed with knowledge, insights into a happy life, life lessons, love, fear, prayer and helpful advice. One can read about anything under the sun. Books have been here for centuries and without them today’s knowledg...
